Directories help you rank by linking to your site. This works because most modern search engines calculate your page’s worth and ranking within their index based on links. Though links generally aren’t the only factor when trying to rank a site, they are a significant one. When submitting to directories its important to remember that search engines will analyze the anchor text, description, importance of the directory page, and age of the link.

Before you begin any campaign to rank within search engines you should do plenty of research on your keywords. Using various keyword suggestion tools will give you a good idea of the phrases that are commonly searched. Sometimes you’ll be quite surprised what comes up! Keep the top 5 or so keyword phrases in mind as you go read the rest of this article.

Search engines will be analyzing the anchor text, which is one of the reasons you’ll need a good knowledge of your best keyword phrases. When you submit to a search engine it’s important to rotate the anchor text so that you don’t have some hundreds of links with identical structures. That many link all pointing to one site is obvious spam to any search engine. Rotate between the top 3 search phrases for your specific domain. Every once and a while uses the 4th or 5th place search phrases. This will make your gain in directory presence look to be more natural and therefore worth more to the search engines.

The description of your directory listing is also important. Google and Yahoo can detect surrounding text, and will associate that descriptive text with your link, which is what you want. However just like above when we noted that having hundreds of links with the same 3 words is spam, having hundreds of identical 30 word descriptions just can’t be natural. Try to use 5 different descriptions and rotate them. Make sure to use keyword phrases from your research above (try not to use the same keywords as you do in your anchor text). This gives your directory link and description a good level of keyword density.

Deep linking is an important part of any link building campaign and is not to be overlooked. It would be incredibly unusual for a site with very good content to never get any links to it. So while submitting to directories link to a few of your main sub-sections, this increases the natural look of your link profile. The same rules to creating anchor text and descriptions apply here.

All directories are not created equal and that’s a fact many don’t remember in their pursuit of rank. Look where your link will be placed within a directory before you put it there. Recently in a link building campaign I purchased an expensive (100$ or so) submission at a directory. After a few weeks I happened to go back to this directory to submit another website. I browsed to the section where I had submitted my last link and realized that link was barely worth anything. The page had about 80 outgoing links, and a PR of 1. While PR is generally not a good way to check whether a site is worth a directory submission or not, you still want to see at least a 3 when you’re paying that much money. So as a good rule of thumb check where your link is will be placed go before you submit.

Google likes old sites and it like old links too. Quite often you won’t see your links giving anything back till around 6 months down the line when they’ve escaped from the infamous sandbox. Link age should also vary or it won’t look natural, this is one way in which directories work quite well. The standard directory process of reviewing sites before inclusion takes between a day and a few months to fully process. This allows your links to have a varied appearance age wise.

Directory submissions are a great way to create good quality links at cost. These links can generally be formatted to fit our needs as webmasters; after all we are the main client base of nearly every directory. Follow the basic anchor, and descriptive text rotation techniques and you’ll assuredly see the results.

If you are looking out for a high ranking on Google, you will have to outrank your competitors and only then can you occupy those top slots. It is not essential that you have an excellent website to get it ranked higher. One of the best ways to be on top is to find the ways to outshine your rivals. The quality of the webpage content and the links to it can do a lot for its ranking factor. There are a few steps that can be taken to ensure a higher ranking on Google.

• Find out all about your main competitors or rivals on Google. You can easily find them by searching Google for your keywords. Take at least 5 keywords and search the best ranked websites for that keyword niche. Write down the URL of these websites.

• Try and find the inbound links of your competitor website. Also check how many of these links contain the same keywords that your are targeting. You can use the link manager of certain internet marketing providers to find the pages that are linked to your competitors’ website as well as the anchor text of the link. Try and get more and better quality links, than your rivals to your website. This is a positive step to better ranking.

• Check the Page Rank of the website by checking the Page Rank number that is displayed by Google. Though this may not be entirely correct, it will give you a fair idea about the quality and ranking of your rival’s website. You can also try to find out the number of high PageRank websites that have the links to the rival’s website. Your strategy should be to get more high Page Ranked links to your website. You can seek help from some internet marketing service providers to get this part done for you.

• Get the inbound links from the domains where you want to promote your website. If you are targeting local domains of Australian or UK , then try and get inbound links from the local versions of Google like Google.co.uk, Google .com.au or Google.co.in etc. The link received from the local domain will increase your Page Rank in the targeted domains.

• There should be positive and logical link between content of the website and the links that it gets. If you have a website for medical instruments, then it is better to get links from hospitals, clinics or any other medical websites rather than having a link from some real estate website. The more related the link is to the content of the website, the more chances you have to get a better Page Rank and out rank your competitors.

SEO Myths You Should Ignore

In Internet marketing, there are tons of myths…and they’re almost like a plague. Unfortunately, many new marketers hear these myths and take them as gospel. With SEO, this is no different. In fact, I think there are more SEO myths than anything else when it comes to marketing online. Well, in this article, I am going to share what I believe are the biggest SEO myths going around. You can take this information to heart or with a grain of salt. That choice is yours.

At the top of my list is all this nonsense about keyword saturation on a page. Some people say 2%, others say 4%. I don’t care what number gets thrown at you. Google (the top search engine) has algorithms that will detect any pattern, whatever it is, that you use. So if you use 4% for each of your pages, Google will figure it out. If you use 2%, same thing. So what I do, and this has worked very well for me, is that I don’t even pay attention to the actual keyword saturation. I let the chips fall where they may, keeping in mind that I want to stay on topic and provide the reader with relevant information. If you do that, you’ll perform a lot better with the SERPs than if you try to stuff your pages with keywords.

Next on my list is this one. You can do all your SEO in one shot. Yeah, and pigs can fly. SEO is not a one shot deal. Sure, maybe you can put your site together in a day and get IT optimized in a day, but there is more to SEO than just what you did with the site itself. There are a lot of factors that affect SEO that take time, such as getting backlinks. In fact, there is more work to do OFF PAGE than there is to do on page. And these things take time. Getting 1,000 backlinks right away is going to get you sandboxed faster than you can say “Bob’s your Uncle.” Okay, got it? SEO takes time.

Finally, and I love this one, if you do everything that you need to do to properly SEO your site, you will reach number one and NEVER have to do another thing again. Yeah, I wish. The real truth is, the guy who is number two is going to be constantly looking to knock you off your pedestal, and the guy behind him and the guy behind him. It is a never ending war. I had a site that I thought would be number 1 forever. So I stopped working it and now it’s number 6. So the work starts all over again. Okay, got it? It never ends.

There you have it…the three biggest SEO myths..at least in my opinion. Are there others? Plenty. Maybe in future articles I’ll touch on some of them. In the meantime, don’t forget…keyword saturation should be flexible, you can’t do all your SEO in one shot and nothing you do will ever be enough to keep you on top forever. The work never ends.

rOne of the main things that needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to these incoming links is the text that is used for those links. If you are able to obtain 50 links into one of your pages that is about dog training and the link text is “dog training”, you are going to rank better than somebody who has 50 incoming links in which the link text is “click here”. You also want to make sure that you mix up the link text from time to time and don’t get too zealous, as this can also throw up a red flag.

rThe best way for you to get the off page optimization done properly is to provide good content that people are going to want to link to on their own. You will then get natural links and you can go about getting other links from a variety of different places and resources. Make sure that you work on this regularly, and your rankings will improve as a result.

In this article, I am going to discuss tips to write effective articles to improve your article marketing campaign. - If I read this article for the first time, would I want to learn more?
- Spell check and grammar check your article before submission.

Now, let’s look at each of these components in a little more detail. First, if I read this article for the first time, would I learn something new? It really makes no sense to submit articles several other authors’ have already covered unless you are exploring a new insight. Second, if I read this article for the first time, would I enjoy the author’s writing style? The best way to get feedback on your articles before submitting them is to have friends and colleagues proofread your material and give feedback. Third, if I read this article for the first time, would I want to learn more? This is a key link in the chain. If you want the reader to come to your website as a result of reading your article, you have to write in an interesting style and let them know that you have much more information on your site. Last and most importantly, spell check and grammar check your articles. This is one my personal pet peeves. No one is perfect and I myself make grammatical mistakes from time to time, but I have read several articles online, even paid for some PLR documents, and the amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes was atrocious. Also, the author loses credibility also as a result. Bottom line, run your document through a spellchecker and grammar checker. Microsoft Word has one built in and it is very easy to use.
